My favorite part of the drive is the place where bare thoughts stretch meadows in front of the westernmost expenses of Naperville, Illinois. Chicago is confetti in the deep-night sky-line.

I think of nothing but fear and hunger. I miss him. I hate him.

As I drive, the inevitable intrudes itself. History solves no mysteries. The road is still poignant with scraps of what I thought I had abandoned: postcards & dialing long-distance & centuries of interlined warfare pressed into my DNA.

He thinks he can call me or drop by at any time of day or night and I will beg him to stay with me. I miss him. I hate him.
