S6 Ep 3 What was the Beast of Gevaudan?

It 18th century rural France and there is a beast terrorising the town of Gevaudan, causing the death and maiming of hundreds of villagers. This thing is thought to be nothing anyone has ever seen before and becomes so famous that even King Louie gets involved. What was the beast and how could it evade capture for so long?
