177. Life is so beautiful, and life is so hard, featuring Kate Bowler

Why don't we like to face the messiness of our lives? Every day, we hold contradictions in our hands between the loveliness and the ugliness of it all, and we always want to find formulas and reasons for what happens—but the truth is that sometimes we never know the answers. Kate Bowler, an associate professor at Duke Divinity School, who started her journey through cancer at age 35 when she had a one-year-old son, speaks honestly when it comes to fears and suffering, dreams and expectations. She reminds us that there is beauty to be found in the darkness, if we are brave enough to embrace it. And when we find comfort through authentic community, we show our kids the value of relationships, genuine emotions, and love.
