Figuring out our personality types has helped Jesse and I build a much stronger marriage based on understanding and love. We’ve shared with your what our personality types are in other episodes, but this time we’re chatting about our perception of the other’s personality. We also dig deep into how having a greater understanding of our differences has helped view them as strengths rather than weaknesses.
First off, I’m an Enneagram 8. I am strong-willed, outspoken, bold, and I can be somewhat aggressive. I just want to get things done and I’m constantly working on how we can get to the end goal in the most efficient and timely manner. When I’m in an unhealthy place, these traits lead me to run over people just to get the job done.
Jesse, however, is an Enneagram 5. He loves to learn and is constantly collecting bits of knowledge. He is perceptive and innovative and he strives to learn more about how things work, including people. He asks questions and shares his knowledge and is invested in just learning more. When he’s not in a healthy place, his need to learn more can trap him in a place of inaction.
It used to drive me crazy that Jesse wouldn’t take action on anything, but now that we recognize his inaction, he takes strides to move toward action each day. Just as I make it a point to slow down and act from a place of compassion rather than the desire to just get it done. We certainly aren’t perfect, but we now view our differences as strengths and help each other stay in a healthy place for our personality types.
