John 13:31-38 (NIV)
Read by: Clayton
Imagine knowing you only had a few days left to live. Who would you want to talk to? What would you want to tell them?
Jesus has said that his “time has come.” And so today’s passage brings us into what some have called the farewell discourses. Judas has left the room, and John devotes the next four chapters to telling his readers the intimate details of Jesus’ last conversation with his disciples.
As you listen, try to imagine that you’re in the room. What do you see and hear? What do you feel?
----------REFLECT----------
1. What words or phrases stood out to you in the passage?
2. This scene presents a contrast between Judas and Peter. Judas’ devotion to Jesus is in many ways just a front. We don’t know much about his motives, but we do know that he is secretly planning to betray Jesus. Judas is easy to hate. Peter, on the other hand, has his heart in it. He really really wants to understand, and he truly believes that his devotion to Jesus is solid. And yet, Jesus predicts that Peter will deny him too. Have you ever committed something to Jesus that you turn around and fail to deliver immediately? Bring that to the LORD who loves you today.
3. Jesus tells his friends that the world will know that they are his disciples because of the way that they love one another. How are we doing at that? How clear is it today that we are Jesus disciples? Ask the Lord to bring to mind other believers that you need help loving.
