**What does it mean to be impulsive?
Impulsiveness is very complex and can be both a blessing and a curse. It isn't necessarily a good or bad thing. It is all in how you handle the situation.
You know you've done this before; you have fired off an offensive response to an email or said something you would later regret. Or perhaps have done something you wish you wouldn't have. Yes, you, like me and many others, have probably fallen victim to impulsivity.
There are other times your impulsiveness will pay off.
The blessing part of impulsivity can be a motivating force behind many artistic genius. For example, some of the best art, books, and music have come out of an impulsive action.
(You take risks, You're adventurous.) Some might say it could be a blessing in disguise.
Now the Curses of impulsiveness:
When you ALWAYS act on impulse, you appear out of control, your behavior is erratic. Your USUALLY emotionally heated and you respond impulsively.
You allow your desires and urges to steer you down a path of destruction. It becomes a curse when spur-of-the-moment decisions are not made out of common logic or just taking time to think it out.
Learn what triggers you:
Learn to become self-aware of what triggers you, this will help you identify the situations that often result in a bad impulsive reaction.
If you know what your triggers are and can plan ahead of time for them, you are more likely to come up with a solution to your weaknesses.
Ask yourself the question, "What am I trying to convey by acting this way?"
Back away from the sitution:
Of course, there will be times that you need to act on a whim. BUT in most cases, your decision can wait. Walking away and putting some space between you and the situation can help the urge diminish. Then you can go back clear headed and respond not out of an emotional trigger.
Find a true friend, one who will tell you what you need to hear and not just kiss your ass:
OK, having a trusted friend or family member who can help curb those spurs of the moment decisions, one you can bounce your ideas off of.
You also have to be open to hear their honest opinion, which can help you see things more clearly, from another's perspective.
Just remember the more you can strike a balance between the two, blessings & curses, the better your life will be.
