An Irish presidency of the European Parliament would be a prestigious win for Ireland. So says the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly. Tonight the Parliament’s biggest group – the EPP (European People’s Party) will vote on the candidate they want to represent the Group in next year’s European Parliament’s presidential elections. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness is one of four candidates running for the EPP election. She faces tough competition but she is in a strong position as a current Vice President of the Parliament. Whoever wins tonight’s vote will then go on to contest the presidential elections which will take place in January when all of the MEPs will vote. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says it would be very good for Ireland if it had another Irish person as president of the European Parliament.
