Melissa grew up in the small town of Cheshire, Connecticut. She studied visual art, music, and theatre throughout high school. Eventually, she gravitated toward musical theatre and earned her MFA in Directing from Florida State University. She has worked professionally as a director, musical theatre director, performer, mentor, and educator for over 30 years and has created over 100 productions.

She currently lives in North Carolina with her husband and two of her three daughters. As a family, they have created many productions and much art together, and Melissa wouldn’t have it any other way. Some of her fondest memories involve sitting on the floor and coloring while asking her then-young daughters questions about their day. These simple acts have filled her with the joy, wonder, and curiosity that are the hallmark of her work to this day.
