The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes has given a lukewarm response to European Parliament proposals to step up defence and security cooperation across the EU. A majority of MEPs today backed a resolution calling for the EU to tackle the deteriorating security situation in and around Europe. MEPs have proposed a range of defence initiatives including increased spending on defence, the establishment of multinational forces and an EU headquarters to plan and command crisis management operations. They also want the EU to act where NATO is unwilling to do so. Brian Hayes says the Fine Gael MEPs abstained from the report because of concerns over some of its proposals.
