The Danish film directors who issued the so-called Dogme 95 manifesto are often discussed by HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano in their courses. That manifesto emphasizes location shooting, handheld camerawork, natural lighting, diegetic sound, and in general strict fidelity to realism. In this podcast episode, Marie and Mike talk about Danish director Susanne Bier, whose Dogme-influenced films include "Open Hearts" (2003), "Brothers" (2004), "After the Wedding" (2007) and "In a Better World" (2010). Incidentally, "In a Better World" won the Academy Award for best foreign-language film. Not only did Hollywood take notice, but Susanne Bier has made a number of English-language films in recent years.
