Susan, a 15-year-old girl, disappeared on November 9, 1968, and her body was found two days later at Helwell Bay, having been strangled. Her murder sent shockwaves through the community.

A thorough police investigation led to the arrest of Alfred John Talbot, who initially pled guilty. However, during the trial, Talbot's mental state deteriorated, leading to confusion and the trial's adjournment. The judge ordered Talbot to be taken to a hospital for treatment. Despite the evidence, no conviction was secured, leaving the community without closure. To this day, the murder of Susan Date remains an unresolved tragedy, leaving her family and the town with a painful sense of loss.
