Social media giants like Facebook and Instagram face big fines if they break new draft EU data protection rules. The new pan-European data protection bill was debated in the European Parliament this week. The draft laws are designed to give citizens control over their private data, while also creating clarity and legal certainty for businesses to spur competition in the digital market. Internet companies like Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram could face huge fines if they don’t adhere to the data protection laws once they come into force. In addition, companies will also have to appoint a data protection officer if they process sensitive data on a large scale or collect information on many consumers. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune now explains.
