In the city of Detroit, at a joint called The Four Deuces, Dave Reynolds is talking to a dame named Vera, when the police enter. Dave quickly hands Vera his wallet and says "Listen to me, quick take this wallet and put it in your purse. Keep it for me till you see me again. I'll explain to you then". Vera says "Not a chance Mister. If you're in trouble...." Dave says "There's 100 bucks in this for you". She says "Give me the wallet". Dave says "You don't know me, if anyone asks questions". A police officer comes over to their table and says "Hello, Davey. Your name's Dave Reynolds isn't it?" Dave says "No, you got the wrong party. The officer says "What's his name, Miss?" Vera says "I don't know. Never laid eyes on this character before tonight". Officer says "You're wanted down at headquarters, Davey. Come along with me". Dave says "For what? My name isn't Reynolds. You haven't got to anything on me". Officer says "We'll see about that. I'll ask you once more nicely to come along". Dave says "Okay, I'm coming". This "arrest" was part of a trap planned by the FBI for the roundup of a million dollar syndicate dealing in smuggled gems. Gold taken out of the U.S. was being converted in the European market for reinvestment in diamonds, which were in demand here for industrial purposes and as a hedge against fluctuating values. FBI Agent Dave Reynolds is posing as a small time hoodlum.
