Mid-Session 4 May 20: Local shares recover from early losses led by bank stocks

The ASX 200 is higher at lunch after falling almost 1.5% in opening trade. Banks are higher after an early stumble despite Westpac reporting a 70% fall in 1H cash earnings. Afterpay has soared on news Chinese digital giant Tencent has taken a 5% stake in the BNPL provider.
