He was an alumnus of the University of Southern California and moved to India in 1935. During his film career in South India, Dungan directed 12 feature films, mostly Tamil, one in Hindi and one in Telugu. He played a crucial role in shaping up the film careers of MG Ramachandran and MS Subblakshmi. Ambikapathi, Sakunthalai, Meera are some of the super hits films directed by ER Dungan.
