Davids mighty men… There were hundreds… but 37 that actually stood out as Men above men, warriors beyond the call of duty!
Who were they?
But who were they really… outcasts, criminals, family members
David was a man who took ordinary men, some less desirable and turned them into one of the most loyal devoted and inspiring warriors in history…
How?
First by who he was as a man: did he have his faults? YES. But he also had many more Godly qualities - his men watched him refuse to kill King Saul, even after all the attempts Saul made on his life, They knew he was to be King, but they learned from David about waiting on God’s timing, They saw that if God could take a shepherd boy and turn him into King, there was hope for them to be something great for God as well. You know what they really learned? they learned you could be loyal an enemy even for the sake of God, even when the enemy was unloyal to your and God.
Colin Powell's wife, Alma, tells a story uncanny in its similarity. The Powell family was holding a small birthday party for
Colin at the official residence of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff when a family member answered a knock at the front door. Two young men who identified themselves as special forces troops from Port Bragg, NC, were passing through Washington and wanted to meet their hero, General Powell. "We're having a family party right now," the relative told them. "Perhaps you could come back a little later." The two men thanked her, turned on their heels and strode down the walk. "Who was that?" General Powell asked. When he found out, Powell burst through the door after the servicemen. Within minutes, the two young sergeants were inside the house, to enjoy the party.
Davids example was the die in which these men were cut from.
Secondly - he was in the trenches with them. He fought side by side putting his own life and future kingdom on the line. He never asked his men to do something he himself would not do. That is how he earned their trust and their respect. He walked the walk, he fought the fight…
One of the things I loved about Michael Jordan besides the fact that he is the greatest basketball player ever… is that the one thing that stands out way above any other “greatest player” is that he made everyone around him better.
There have been some amazing players, but Jordans career is noted most directly by taking good players and making them great by his own example, dedication and hard work. You talk to any one of them and they will tell you “he forced me to be better by his very own example”
Did David have a team of mighty men… Kind of.
What he actually had was a team of Davids created by his own example AND FOR THAT REASON - lucky for them…David was a mighty man.
Todays challenge:
3 questions to chew on.
- would you be satisfied if your friends had your character and integrity?
- Are your friends more like Christ because of you?
- Do you have a David you are under? Why not? Find one!
