Ireland needs to ensure it develops alternative transport routes to mainland Europe post-Brexit.
That’s the warning from the Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune who is a member of the European Parliament’s Transport Committee.
MEPs in the committee are currently investigating EU proposals to expand maritime trade routes from Ireland to continental Europe. The plans would be particularly important if the UK crashes out of the EU without a Brexit deal.
That could see traditional transport routes from the Republic of Ireland through the likes of Dover to Calais severely compromised.
