Life is a series of dots. One dot connect to a line to another dot, to a line connected to another dot. The dots represent loss, failure, success, goals achieved, death of dreams, break ups, wins… etc… it’s mixture in anyones life. We tend to focus on the dots. Rather we should focus on the lines… the lines represent the journey… the journey is all about are we learning on the journey.
Look when you go on a real journeyer trip you look at scenery, you check out sites, you meet new people. You don’t just close your eyes and say “Tell me when I get to Niagara Falls”. What a stupid way to travel!
The same is true in our life journey. Open your eyes up and learn all along the way. Learn everything you can in the context of where you are at. Don’t just live married, learn while married. Don’t just work a craft or skill continue to learn that craft and skill. Don’t just work with people, learn how to better work with all people.
In every area of life you should be challenging yourself… “what am I learning”.
I can tell you a lot about life… and the best stuff I can tell you is not from my wins or losses, but from my learning.
- 1 Search me oh lord and know my ways.
What has kept you from learning? Ask God!
Psalm 139:23, 24
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24
Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
- 2 Track your journey. Write down what you want to learn, and how you plan to learn it.
Keep track of what you are learning and what that means to you. How you are applying it.
Psalm 119: 15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.
- 3 Keep a diet of continual learning. Read a book at least 1 a month, listen to podcasts that teach you regarding the areas you want to learn. Watch youtube videos that teach. Become mentored by someone in areas you want to learn.
- 4 Don’t let success stop you from learning.
So you create a really good soup. Everyone loves it. You are a success… but another chef comes to you and says “hey if you added just a pinch of garlic, it would be even better, it would be fantastic”. But you think “people already love it, its a success, its a hit, I don’t have to listen to you”.
OK, BUT YOU JUST MISSED LEARNING BECAUSE OF YOUR SUCCESS.
We see this all through the OT with the nation of Israel. They have some success in life and they quit learning to rely on God… and wham they hit failure. It was’t the success that was the problem… it wasn’t even the failure… it was the failing to learn.
What are areas of your life where you have had success stop you from pushing in and learning more?
- 5 Check your continued failure. If you are continuing to fail in an area of your life- seek specific help to pinpoint why.
- 6 Learn to learn and not just to regurgitate. Ask yourself what is the reason to learn this? Pique your interest and learning becomes a great adventure.
