Early morning in downtown Los Angeles on November 4th, Merchant Fire Dispatch Officer H.J. "Harry" Ruud's attention is suddenly attracted by a cry of "Stop Thief!" and the sound of hard shoes pounding on the concrete sidewalk ahead of him. Looking up, he sees a man disappearing around the next corner on a dead run. For three blocks, the mad race continues. Then, at the corner of Third and Alameda Streets, Officer Oliver Densmore spots the fugitive and joins the strange pursuit. Two blocks later, the two officers apprehend the breathless suspect and bring him to a halt. The suspect says "Only one bottle of milk, that's all I got". Densmore says "I don't care whether it's one bottle of milk or the Bank of Italy, you stole it, didn't you?" Suspect says "Yes, I only wanted to borrow it". Densmore asks "Did you see him take this milk?" Ruud says "No, that old watchman down by the warehouse spotted him. Densmore says "I see. Well, come on, let's take a walk down to the station. I think the desk sergeant can handle this". Suspect says "You're going to arrest me for just borrowing one bottle of milk? I told you I'd give it back". Densmore says "Sure, they all want to give it back, after it's too late. Come on get moving". The suspect, accompanied by Officer Densmore and Fire Officer Ruud, start a more leisurely walk, this time in the direction of the police station. For two blocks, the three walk in silence, then the suspect says "Hey, I got something I want to ask you". Densmore says "Go ahead". Suspect says "You won't get sore?" Densmore says "I don't know. Suppose you ask me and find out". Suspect says "I live up here in this block. I got a room in a hotel so I want to know if I can I stop for a minute and get something?" Densmore says "You won't need anything where you're going. The city supplies everything". Suspect says "But, I want to get some money for bail so I can start my new job tomorrow".
