Market Close 17 Apr 18: ASX 200 closes flat; banks decline

The local sharemarket has failed to hang on to earlier gains, with the ASX 200 ending the session unchanged at 5,841. Improvements in the Materials, Telco and Industrials sectors were offset by losses in the Utilities, Consumer Staples and Financial sectors.
