Ever buy something due to a commercial, you know some slick marketing and a cool jingle and then you get it and you hate it.
branding/marketing became necessary following the urban revolution in ancient Mesopotamia in the 4th century BCE, when large-scale economies started mass-producing commodities such as alcoholic drinks, cosmetics and textiles. These ancient societies imposed strict forms of quality control over commodities, and also needed to convey value to the consumer through branding. The idea was that you would only dare market if you had the highest of standards… WOW - a lot has changed.
I had a person come into my office years ago and he was pushing a multi level sales /marketing business (I could have my own business) he tried to really impress me by how much he respected me and cared for me - by telling me those exact words. He got my name wrong right off the start, so I would correct him each time. He said “Garett”…. I said my name is Gareth… then he would say Listen Garen… I would correct him with a different name “my name is Garen it is Garf… he was to busy respecting and caring for me to even catch on… pun intended. He tried so hard to market me he turned me off.

A great little chapter on marketing is not a department.
Marketing is not a department
Do you have a marketing department? If not, good. If
you do, don't think these are the only people responsible
for marketing.
Accounting is a department. Marketing isn’t.
Marketing is something everyone in your company
is doing 24/7/365.
Just as you cannot not communicate, you cannot
not market:
Every time you answer the phone, it's marketing.
Every time you send an e-mail, it's marketing.
Every time someone uses your product, it's marketing.
Every word you write on your Web site is marketing.
If you build software, every error message
is marketing.
If you're in the restaurant business, the
after-dinner mint is marketing.
If you're in the retail business, the checkout counter
is marketing.
·If you're in a service business, your invoice
is marketing.
Recognize that all of these little things are more
important than choosing which piece of swag to throw
Into a conference goodie bag.Marketing isn't just a few individual events. its is the sum total of everything you do.
Your Christian walk isn’t just your Sunday church attendance, or just your attendance and your giving. It’s not just your attendance, giving and your small group bible study and your political view. It goes beyond your attendance, giving small group and beyond your reading and praying and memorization. Beyond your Christian music and christian bumper stickers.
Your Christian walk is (to steal their line) the sum total of everything you do. and in fact it is not a walk it is a lifestyle… maybe even more pointedly it is your life.
I was accused as a kid of being consumed with Barefoot waterskiing. I had a friend who said if you ask Garth his name he will say “Barefoot… barefoot waterskiing”. I loved it more than girls - truth. When My wife and I were dating and getting serious about the future, I wrote in a card I love you more than waterskiing and she knew at that moment this was getting serious.
Fast forward 34 years. I am hoping my life to those who do not have a relationship with Jesus is seen much like my waterskiing in the past. He is my life, it is not something I do.
*And isn’t that the problem - when it’s not who you are it’s a religion and that is the number one turn off. But when it’s your life… well that is a relationship with.
When I was 16 years old I got a job at Intervarsity Christian fellowship press. I was taught how to run a printing press. A big old huge monstrosity of a machine.
(my finger prints were around the world)
People should see Gods finger prints all over you life. How you respond to the clerk at the convenient store, your driving, your willingness to listen, your love for those you disagree with, the other political party, the games you play, the hobbies you keep the patience you have… your life should be Jesus, and Jesus should be your life.
I would hate to have to tell people about religion… but I love telling people about my relationship with Jesus.
John 13:34A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so also you must love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”
The irony of this… do you catch it. Jesus came and despised the religious leaders of the day. They took the simple 10 commandments and turned them into over 600 additional commands - that is the heart of religion. Jesus hated religion.
and now he says “here is a new command… wait I thought commands were bad… Love one another… oh this is a command the disciples quickly realize can only be achieved by allowing Gods love to flow through you… it has to be a relationship to do this- not simply a command.
