US Close 1 Feb 16: Strong close for the US on Friday - setting up a strong start to FEB for the ASX

European shares rose after investors were heartened by an easing of Japanese monetary policy with the Bank of Japan adopting negative interest rates. The FTSEurofirst 300 index rose by 2.3%, with the German Dax up 1.6% and the UK FTSE up 2.6%. In London trade shares in BHP Billiton fell by 0.5% but shares in Rio Tinto rose by 0.8%.

* US sharemarkets finished near the day's highs on latest efforts by Japan to stimulate economic growth. The Dow Jones rose by almost 397 points or 2.5% with the S&P 500 up by 2.5% and the Nasdaq up by 107 points or 2.4%. Over the week the Dow rose by 2.3% with the S&P 500 up 1.7% while the Nasdaq gained 0.5%. The Dow lost 5.5% in January.
