Silkworms are the caterpillar from which raw silk comes. Do-mestication of the Silkworm began 5,000 years ago in China, eventually spreading worldwide. Silk is one of the strongest fibers known. It takes between three and ten strands of fi-ber to make one usable silk thread, and two to three thousand cocoons for one pound of fine silk. The re-sulting fabric shimmers like a full moon refracting a kaleidoscope of hues, offering Lunar symbolism. The wonder of the Silkworm’s message is in seeing something tiny and rather unsightly can be the source of im-mense beauty.
