AM Report 1 Aug 18: Markets rebound on new trade hopes

US sharemarkets rose on Tuesday on reports that the US and China may re-start trade talks. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said "there continues to be quiet conversations" on CNBC. Shares of large exporters Boeing (+1.5%), Caterpillar (+2.9%) and Deere (+4.8%) all rose. Procter & Gamble (+0.9%) and Pfizer (+3.5%) both reported better-than-expected earnings. Shares of Apple were up by 0.2% during trading, rising by 2.2% on a strong earnings result after market close. The Dow Jones index rose by 108 points or 0.4%, the S&P 500 index was up by 0.5% and the Nasdaq index rose by 41 points or 0.6%.
