The European Commission has today published new legislative proposals on the future of food and farming. The Commission is proposing a cut to CAP funding of around 5% percent. And it’s set out nine objectives which it says will ensure the future CAP will continue to ensure access to high-quality food and strong support for the unique European farming model with an increased focus on the environment and climate.
The new proposals follow a vote in the European Parliament this week on the future of EU farming. MEPs called for the post-2020 EU farm policy to be smarter, simpler, fairer and more sustainable while also ensuring it would be well financed and truly common. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says the European Parliament will fight hard to ensure vital funds such as CAP are not slashed in future EU budgets.
