What is the best excuse you have ever heard… I am sorry I am late, they did not have enough Trans Ams to buy so I had to wait until I could find more.
Some sheiks came over to stay in Dallas for a few weeks. One of the boys went out to buy some Trans Ams… as in 20 plus… That is why he was late.
For the most part excuses are simple ways to defer the truth. You know- Make it so I don’t have to own up to my mistakes.
Maybe you have heard of the term scapegoat. It actually comes from Leviticus in the old Testament. The priest would take two goats, one would be sacrificed for the sins of the people and the second one the priest would place his hands on it and speak over it all the problems, atrocities and hidden sins of the people. They would then lead that goat out to the wilderness… where it would most likely get eaten by a wild beast. It was the scapegoat for everyone.
Now thats taking excuses to the next level… blaming a goat!
My Buddy Phil and I have traveled around the world speaking to students. From grade schools, to college and then some… quite a few prisons… every juvey hall, every minimum or maximum prison we have spoken in - quite literally every kid had an excuse as to why they were there.
When studied psychologists have come up with the 3 basic excuses.
#1 Denial. I did not do it. Blatant lying - you are able to separate the truth from the act.
#2 It’s not my fault because… It is always someone else’s fault and you have plenty of reasons to back that up.
#3 I did it but… we then explain why surrounding circumstances made us look bad.
Proverbs 22:13 The fool says there is a lion outside I can’t go out.
Look one thing we know for sure is that excuses expose our character, or lack there of it.
We all know those guys who always have an excuse… you have heard me say “he who has an excuse will always find a philosophy to back it up”. We in the long run we do not like to be around people who make excuses… because honestly we do not like to be around men of lagging character.
In the same way we know men who make no excuses… they except blame and they except fame. They know who they are and they are willing to deal with it.
Here is the deal… we see it in others… don’t think that others don’t see it in you.
But here is the rub, every excuse we hold on to we are keeping ourselves from being worked on by the Holy Spirit. We can’t become more like Christ until we admit our excuses and allow his spirit into that once walled off area of our life. It used to say “only those who buy my excuse can enter here”…. not now it says “anyone can enter here”. That is when Jesus takes over!
