Apparently the administration at Iona College, located just outside of New York city, decided that winning basketball games was more important than examining the record of Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino before they hired him in early March. If they had bothered to look at just how he left his last job, they might have realized that the NCAA could be calling.
Yesterday, the controversial college sports police released a report outlining what kind of sewer Pitino created in Kentucky, and now Iona, a Catholic college with just over 4000 students, has poop all over them. Rick Pitino will probably be suspended for half of the next season, but will win games. And I guess that's all that's important at Iona.
In contrast, Hall of Fame football coach Don Shula died yesterday - he retired in 1996 after 27 years with the Dolphins - two Super Bowl wins and universal respect. 90 years young, 70 of those years involved in pro sports, and not a whiff of scandal....
