Shhh We’re Reading Dirty Books
Arts:Books
In observance of Hispanic Heritage month, we are highlighting Latina author Alana Quintana Albertson and her readaptation of the classic Romeo and Juliet. In her retelling, Ramón and Julieta come from different sides of the block and their scene is laid out in modern day southern California where a grudge between his father and her mother stems from nothing other than, you guessed it, fish tacos. After running away from what could have been a super sexy, steamy one-night stand with a handsome stranger known only as Romeo, Julieta can’t seem to stop thinking about him. But her worries stem from the love of her work as a chef in the barrio and the fear that the Taco King tycoon will soon be buying out her entire block for the inevitable process of gentrificación. Join us as we discuss the beautiful love growing between these two, despite strife between their families, and experience with us the ending that finally gives these star-crossed lovers a chance at life, not death.
