Why the Demon Figures (Gargoyles & Chimeras) on Notre Dame?

Many are posting the pics of the Grotesques (demon figures) which populate the roof of the Notre Dame Cathedral and seeing how that might have been a opening to its destruction.  They actually have a scriptural purpose, if we simply understand the church of centuries ago.  As do the statues, and storybook pictures in stain glass.
