This week we are joined by the eminent Mia Geisinger, DDS, M.S.
Dr. Geisinger dives in deep, sharing with us the roots of her life in dentistry and the work she does today at the cutting edge of the dental industry. Dr. Geisinger is a treasure to the dental community (and somehow finds time to write poetry while working around the clock?!?) and an incredible advocate for female periodontists and women dentists. We are so happy to have her as a guest on this week's Tooth or Dare.
Mia talks us through the early days of calling EVERY periodontist in Manhattan before landing her first job in a periodontist’s office which would eventually lead to her high-level positions in the American Dental Association.
Dr. Geisinger shares a behind the scenes glimpse of how she and the ADA handled the initial wave of Covid 19 and created guidelines for dental offices that follow the CDC guidelines and how those guidelines have changed over time.
Irene shares her thoughts about protecting patients in the office by making thoughtful and informed choices outside of the office.
Mia’s current projects aim to answer a few questions such as:
- Are hygienists better than Dentists at wearing PPE and following sanitary guidelines?
- How do you deliver oral hygiene to patients with dementia?
- What is the best perio procedure?
- Is it possible to have a creative life outside of dentistry?
Mia L. Geisinger, DDS, MS is a Professor and Director of Advanced Education in Periodontology in the Department of Periodontology in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry. Dr. Geisinger received her BS in Biology from Duke University, her DDS from Columbia University School of Dental Medicine, and her MS and Certificate in Periodontology and Implantology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Geisinger is a Diplomate in the American Board of Periodontology. She has served as the President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, as the Chair of the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs, and on multiple national and regional organized dentistry. She is a fellow of the International Team for Implantology, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists. She currently serves as a member of the American Academy of Periodontology’s Board of Trustees. She has authored over 45 peer-reviewed publications and her research interests include periodontal and systemic disease interaction, implant dentistry in the periodontally compromised dentition, and novel treatment strategies for oral soft and hard tissue regeneration. She lectures nationally and internationally on topics in periodontology and oral healthcare.
