US sharemarkets were mixed on Wednesday, although the Dow Jones index hit an intra-day record high. DuPont shares surged by 3.2% after news it was set to win antitrust approval from EU regulators for its $130 billion merger with Dow Chemical (+4%). Five of the major 11 S&P sectors were higher. However the energy sector (-1.46) led the weakness, following the oil price lower. At the close of trade the Dow Jones index was up by 33 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.1% while the Nasdaq was also lower by 5 points or 0.1%.
