The European Parliament has today voted for a range of measures to improve the quality of drinking water from our taps.
MEPs want to tighten the maximum limits for certain pollutants in water such as lead and harmful bacteria along with monitoring for levels of microplastics.
The Parliament is also urging member states to set up free water fountains where feasible in cities and public places. They want tap water to be provided for free or for a low fee in restaurants, canteens and catering services.
The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says such initiatives are needed to improve public trust in our water systems.
