The Abomination of Desolation ... (in Daniel, Jesus, & Paul)

Jesus said, "So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), ..." (Matthew 24:15). What is the background in Daniel to this strange phrase "abomination of desolation"? How do Jesus and Paul pick up on this kind of idea on the New Testament?
