In this week's Dental Handoff, Dr. Kelly Tanner makes the 'dental handoff' to Dr. Merlin Ohmer!

On Nov. 12, 2023, Merlin P. Ohmer, DDS, MAGD, was installed as president of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). Dr. Ohmer, whose service to AGD is extensive and his knowledge about the organization is deep. He served as a board member, continuing education director, vice president and president of the Florida AGD.

He also served as Region 20 regional director and as a trustee for Region 20 until his election as AGD vice president in 2021.Dr. Ohmer earned his DDS from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry while in the U.S. Army Reserve. He then spent three years on active duty in the U.S. Army, stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia. After release from active duty, he served in the Louisiana National Guard as a major and practiced in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

He then served in active duty in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps as a lieutenant commander. He retired as a captain in 2016 after 30 years of active military service. He then opened a solo practice in St. Augustine, Florida, where he practiced until 2022.Recently, Dr. Ohmer was awarded the James Frank Collins Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes outstanding members from Florida AGD who have made significant contributions to the profession. Ohmer will serve as president until Nov. 24, 2024.

In this episode, Dr. Ohmer emphasizes the importance of effective leadership, listening to your team, and knowing when it's time to let go of team members who aren't the right fit. He also highlights the value of empathy, resilience through adversity, and learning from failures to achieve long-term success.
