Spiritual Realities - The New Covenant

Spiritual realities are truths, facts, or things in the WORD, which relate to GOD (Spirit), Angels (both good and evil), and men. 

Is there a difference between the old covenant and the new covenant? Notwithstanding the exploits of the old covenant, what necessitated the need for a new covenant?
