MEPs from the European Parliament are this week visiting the US as part of the Panama Papers tax evasion inquiry. The 9-person delegation will meet a range of US officials including politicians from the US House of Representatives and Senate. The visit is part of the European Parliament’s inquiry into the Panama Papers scandal which was uncovered last year. It revealed how some of the rich and wealthy were using tax havens to evade tax, launder money and avoid sanctions. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy, who is on the Parliament’s Panama Papers inquiry, is part of the delegation to the US. He says the scandal of tax avoidance and evasion by wealthy corporations is one of the defining issues of our time.
