The government is being urged to incentivise Irish people to generate their own renewable energy, with a view to selling any excess back to the national grid.
It is after the European Parliament backed new legislation on renewable targets.
Binding targets for renewables of 32 per cent by 2030 and an indicative target for energy efficiency of 32.5 per cent have been backed by MEPs meeting in Strasbourg.
The move is part of the EU’s plan to tackle climate change.
