Cogitations e32: about limited atonement

Did God just decide to send Jesus to a select group? In this third installment of out look at Calvinism we induce the evidence from God's Word about atonement. IF man is totally depraved so God had to unconditionally elect some men then atonement MUST have been only for the elect. How does this doctrine hold up to scrutiny?
