Morning Report 10 Jul 20: US sharemarkets were mostly lower on Thursday

Shares had opened higher after data showed the number of Americans filing for jobless benefits dropped to a near four-month low last week. But shares lost momentum after Florida reported a record number of coronavirus-related hospitalisations and deaths. Walgreens Boots Alliance shares tumbled 7.8% after it reported a quarterly loss compared with a profit a year earlier. Wells Fargo (-2%) announced plans to cut thousands of jobs because of the pandemic. However, Amazon (+3.3%), Facebook (+0.4%), Microsoft (+0.7%), and Apple (+0.4%) hit all-time highs, helping the Nasdaq reverse earlier losses. The Dow Jones index fell by 361 points or 1.4%. The S&P500 index lost 0.6%. But the Nasdaq index lifted 55 points or 0.5% to another record closing high.
