The Catholic Church created Halloween. Pope Boniface IV in 610AD establshied All Martyrs Day. Pope Gregory IV moved it to November 1st. The name was changed to All Saints Day so we could honor all the souls including the martyrs. Saints, in English-speaking dialects, are sometimes called "The Hallowed" so it was called All Hallows Day. The evening before, All Hallows Day Eve, eventually was pronounced "Hallow'een."
