The American flag, adopted June 14, 1777, by the Continental Congress, was designed to represent our new union of the thirteen original states. The thirteen stripes symbolize the original colonies, while the stars represent the states in the union. The colors of the flag—red for valor and bravery, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice—are also symbolic.
