US Close 30 Mar 17: Brexit has begun, Dow weaker again

European sharemarkets rose on Wednesday. There was little reaction from markets after the UK triggered article 50 - the formal announcement of Britain's intention to leave the EU. 

US sharemarket indices were mixed on Wednesday as the strength in energy stocks was offset by a fall in financials. The lift in oil prices supported the energy sector, which rose 1.2%. The S&P financial sector fell by 0.5%. Amazon rose 2.2% and hit an all-time high. The Dow Jones index fell by 42 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.1% and the Nasdaq was up by 22 points or 0.4%.
