Matthew 22:15-22 Taxes were usually the impetus or movement that caused revolutions. Specifically NOT paying taxes. Make no mistake about this - it was a politically motivated position the Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus in. • The context of this particular situation is important. Context is always important when it comes to scripture. However, the basis for the confrontation from the Pharisees was much more than addressing the position Jesus held on paying taxes.

The Herodians and the Pharisees disagreed on a lot of stuff. The one thing that united them was their opposition of Jesus. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” Their common goal was to get rid of Jesus.
