Morning Report 2 Jul 21: US sharemarkets were higher on Thursday

Data generally encouraged investors with jobless claims falling to the lowest level since the pandemic-led lockdowns. But the prices paid component of the ISM survey was the highest since records began in 1979. The energy sector rose 1.7%, leading sector gains. The Dow Jones index rose by 131 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.5% to yet another record high. And the Nasdaq index rose by 18 points or 0.1%.
