How many times in the last week have you said to yourself, “I should do this or that”? I’ve done it myself at least two or three times already. In our world, especially in our Christian subculture, there are expectations. But I wonder how many of those expectations are instituted by God rather than our own understanding of what we think God wants. We desire to be righteous. We desire to honor God, but in our efforts to do so we may focus too much on our effort. Jesus came to this earth, lived, forgave, healed, died, and rose again to enable us to live free. And yet, as Paul says in Colossians, we go right back to following a list of rules in hopes of being able to prove, perhaps to ourselves, perhaps to God, that we are in fact righteous. We willingly slip on the handcuffs and chains that Jesus obliterated by His incredible work and nullify His grace.
