I spoke at a denominational youth conference about 12 years ago… I did a fun gag about how I could never trust superman because he wore his underwear on the outside of his pants… lets be honest. Tights!
So I egg the kids on (about 1000) would you be able to listen to me and trust me if I was up here with my underwear on over some tights?
So I drop my pants… and I am wearing bright red baggy silk underwear on over blue tights with the red pulled up tube socks… and the kids went nuts.
BUT AFTER THE SERVICE… a bunch of the youth pastors wanted to talk to me. I promise you can’t make this stuff up - they wanted to know how come I was promoting homosexuality WHUH?
I had one particular youth pastor berate me for weeks over social media, emails, texts…
Finally I had it. I said if you are such a super Christian I will fly you here to Minnesota and we can go head to head in our Christian walk. Lets see who tells more people about Jesus, how many people we lead to Jesus, how many people you heal versus I heal, how many prophetic words you give versus how many I give…
I MEAN I HONESTLY LOST IT… I told him his Christianity wasn’t worth the paper his bible was printed on. I CALLED HIM OUT.
You know the rest of that story was that last day at the conference when I spoke I got up and lambasted the youth pastors - I rebuked them for being more passionate and upset about me wearing tights then about people going to hell…
I walked off stage and the head of their denominational youth conference handed me my check, said you should probably just leave right now… and oh yeah… we probably won’t ever have you back.
Have you ever called someone out for a bad Christian walk, life?
It’s pretty ballsy!
You know the only people Jesus ever Got mad at were the Religious people. People who were so full of right and wrong they were no good to the kingdom of heaven.
What do you do when someone calls you out?
We see two distinct sides to how its done in the scriptures.
In John chapter 8 Jesus goes all out on the pharisees. I mean he tears them up one side and down the other.
He calls them liars, children of satan who is the father of lies, he calls them blind and that they do not know God. He says they will die in their sins. You are from hell.
Soooo what happens next?
The Pharisees try to slur and defame Christ by innuendo -
He’s demon possessed
He is illegitimate,
and they throw in a racial slur for good measure
Read verses 41-48
And here is how we should act… Jesus doesn’t even dignify it by comment. He doesn’t even let it resonate with him. He will call them out on their backslidden ways… but he won’t get petty, he won’t attack their attacks. He simply states the truth without rebuttal and without attitude regarding their smear tactics.
This is what I aspire to. I am not saying I am there yet… but may that be what we all aspire to. Hate the sin, love the sinner.
