The Buddha, Shakyamuni, impressed on his students to study "broadly all the Buddhist and the non-Buddhist teachings". So, when I use the word "scholarship", I mean to follow precisely the Buddha's exhortation. Accordingly, I, like Nichiren, take exception to those who would pick and chose from amongst the Buddhist and non-Buddhist teachings to formulate their particular "version" or "truth", and claim it to be the "complete and unique teaching of the Dharma.
