A powerful collection of photos and first-person accounts by formerly-enslaved Americans

The photos and accompanying interviews were collected during the WPA in 1930s. They are people who were enslaved prior to the Civil War, and how their lives progressed in emancipation. These documents and photos have been th eNational Archives ever since, and are being seen by the public for the first time.
