Ray (2004) Recap and Review (S4: E1)

Welcome to Season 4 of The Wright Perspective Podcast! Siblings Aubrey, Genia and Brittany Wright honor the late Ray Charles with a recap and discussion of Ray (2004) starring Jamie Foxx along with Kerry Washington, Clifton Powell, Harry Lennix, Terrence Howard, Larenz Tate, Richard Schiff and Regina King in supporting roles.

 

After picking a voting symbol (01:17) and doing a recap (09:26), the siblings continue their discussion from the finale of season 3 about the extent to which biopics have a burden to be accurate (13:14), using the documentary Ray Charles, Genius of Soul, as a reference point. Aubrey, Genia and Brittany go to discuss Ray Charles' participation in the creation of the movie and the other icons, like Quincy Jones, that rose to prominence around the same time (26:32). 

 

This leads to a discussion of the music and lip syncing performances (35.:40), casting and acting performances (46:14), and Ray Charles’ little-known business achievements (51:38). The episode wraps with a reflection on the way childhood trauma was depicted in the film (59:33) and, of course, a vote to determine whether this movie is a classic from the Wright Perspective (01:04:41).
