Morning Report 9 Oct 19: Stocks retreat as US-China relations deteriorate

US sharemarkets fell on Tuesday as investor trade optimism faded. Expected progress in US-China trade talks were dashed by a report that the US Commerce Department will add 28 Chinese companies to a US trade blacklist. And the US announced visa restrictions on some Chinese officials. China's foreign ministry said to "stay tuned" for retaliation. The Dow Jones closed down by 314 points or 1.2%. The S&P500 index fell by 1.6% and the Nasdaq was down by 132 points or 1.7%.
